Find Your Path, Build Your Future: Foundational Career Readiness Programme for the NDT 2022 Batch
As part of ITUM’s continued efforts to strengthen early career development, a comprehensive institute-wide career readiness programme titled “Find Your Path, Build Your Future” was delivered throughout May 2025 for all disciplines of the NDT 2022 batch. Designed as the first major preparatory activity for students commencing their industrial training in 2026, the programme provided structured guidance on aligning personal aspirations with industry expectations.
Purpose and Strategic Scope
The programme was crafted with the objective of equipping students with the mindset, clarity, and professional readiness needed for a successful transition from campus to workplace. Conducted during each division’s assigned Career Guidance slot, the sessions introduced students to the essential requirements of industrial training while encouraging long-term thinking about their professional journey.
At the core of the programme were three foundational pillars necessary for early career success:
Setting Clear and Meaningful Career Goals
Students were guided on the importance of defining realistic, well-structured career goals. The session emphasized how early goal-setting provides direction, supports informed decision-making, and helps students position themselves strategically in competitive professional landscapes.
Exploring Diverse Career Pathways
Recognizing the breadth of opportunities available for NDT diplomates, the session highlighted multiple potential career routes across engineering and technology sectors. Students gained insight into how industrial training can open pathways into technical roles, emerging industries, supervisory positions, and continuous professional development.
Career Grooming and Professional Readiness
A significant portion of the programme focused on career grooming, including professional behaviour, communication etiquette, reliability, and workplace adaptability. Students were introduced to the key behavioural and interpersonal attributes expected by employers—skills that significantly influence success during industrial training.
Institute-wide Delivery and Engagement
The programme was conducted across all ITUM divisions throughout May 2025, ensuring comprehensive coverage of the entire NDT 2022 intake. By delivering the session within each division’s Career Guidance timetable, students benefited from both continuity and relevance to their field of study.
Strong student engagement across divisions reflected the timeliness and importance of the programme, setting a strong foundation as they prepare for their industrial placements in 2026.
Curated and conceptualized by Dr. Ruchira Wijesena, Head of the Industrial Training, Career Guidance, and Post Diploma Education Centre, the sessions were collaboratively delivered by Dr. Wijesena, Mr. Kamalnath Jinadasa, Training Engineer, and the respective Divisional Training Coordinators. This coordinated approach ensured both institute-wide consistency and discipline-specific relevance.
