Mandatory Training Awareness Session: Preparing NDT Students for Industrial Placements

The Industrial Training, Career Guidance, and Post Diploma Education Centre at ITUM successfully conducted the annual Training Awareness Session on October 1st and 2nd, 2025, for all divisions of the NDT 2022 batch. This mandatory programme provided students with a clear and structured understanding of the procedures required for the successful completion of their industrial training component—an essential element of the NDT qualification.

The session ensured that students were fully informed about both internal ITUM protocols and the formal requirements of the National Apprentice & Industrial Training Authority (NAITA), enabling them to approach their upcoming training with confidence and clarity.

Key Procedural Requirements for Industrial Training

The session presented students with a streamlined overview of the responsibilities and documentation required throughout their training journey.

Placement and Registration

Students were briefed on the mandatory nature of industrial training, which consists of two 26-week full-time placements completed during Semester V and Semester VI.

Key guidance included:

  • Students must independently search for suitable placement organizations.
  • All training must be undertaken at a NAITA-registered Training Organization.
  • If unable to secure a placement, students must formally declare this within one month of the semester commencement.
  • Once a placement is confirmed, students must submit the Worksite Form, Contract Form, and Training Schedule, inform their Training Coordinator, and complete NAITA registration.

Training Monitoring and Required Documentation

Students were reminded that the Daily Diary & Logbook, issued by NAITA, is an official record that must be maintained throughout the training period. This diary must include:

  • Daily tasks and work duration
  • Nature of work performed
  • Tools, machines, or processes used
  • Skills and knowledge gained
  • Supervisor’s signatures and remarks

Training progress will be evaluated through unannounced visits by NAITA officials and ITUM academic/training staff.

Reporting and Final Assessment

The assessment structure for industrial training was clearly explained:

  • A Progress Report covering the first 10 weeks must be submitted via Moodle by Week 12.
  • A Final Report covering the full 26 weeks must be submitted within two weeks of training completion.
  • Students must attend a final presentation and VIVA, conducted by a panel representing ITUM, NAITA, and industry personnel.
  • Overall assessment is based on the VIVA, the Progress and Final Reports, and the Daily Diary.
  • Students are expected to maintain professional conduct and adhere to workplace regulations throughout the training period.

Session Delivery and Coordination

The Training Awareness Sessions were delivered by the Industrial Training, Career Guidance, and Post Diploma Education Centre, with support from the divisional Training Coordinators. The collaborative effort ensured that students across all divisions received consistent, accurate guidance aligned with national training standards. The session was conducted by Dr.Ruchira Wijesena, Head of the center and Mr. Kamalnath Jinadasa the training engineer.

As the final preparatory activity before the ITUM Career Fair, this mandatory awareness session plays a crucial role in ensuring that every student enters their industrial placement well-informed, professionally prepared, and aligned with institutional and national expectations.
